I hope this isn't a political gimmick. We've seen too many appointments in this Government of external people where it's all about Gordon Brown's PR. I'm always suspicious of the Government's motives when it does things like this.

This underlines why Baroness Scotland's position is now completely untenable. This is increasingly looking like an attempted whitewash that has gone badly wrong.
Baroness Scotland made this law, she broke it, she can no longer credibly stay in her job.
She was the minister who steered this law through the House of Lords and who insisted upon its stringent application. She has no excuse for breaking it
