I think Russell is in the mould of people on radio who throughout the decades have pushed the boundaries, from Kenny Everett to Chris Morris to Jonathan Ross and now Russell Brand. He is a great comedian.
I remember playing against Chelsea for the first time and I was man-marked by a player called Chris Morris. His coach, Gianluca Vialli, had told him to be my shadow and he never left me along. I could not breathe
I can tell you this, Pat Morris has told me that he has never said that he wants $4 million ... I said, 'Well, you've given me several comparable players who you think are worth that number.' And if you look at comparisons, the kid in Ottawa (Chris Kelly) just signed (for four years at $2.125 million per). And he told me one time that he was very comparable with Sean. So, you know, it's negotiating.
But when people say nice things about anything I do, I think: what's wrong with you? There must be something wrong with you if you like my rubbish. Or I just think: God, that's a terrible reflection of how bad our society is if I'm being held up as an example of something even vaguely good. That's quite depressing. Also, I don't think I am some kind of subversive maverick at all.
The way the equation works is that the ruder you've been about someone you've never met, the nicer they will be when you meet them, and therefore the worse you will feel. You sort of think: who's the shitbag in this equation? It's not them.
They turn up and I hope they haven't read what I've written, because they're quite nice really
But equally I can get drawn into Big Brother, and The Apprentice is a big favourite of mine as well. My position is kind of ambivalent, I suppose. I see the whole of television as this big distraction engine that probably prevents me from doing anything worthwhile with my life.
Sometimes I can watch things like that and get upset about the state of mankind
