The third inning, in which the Rays scored three runs off Tim Wakefield, Devern Hansack, Javier Lopez, and David Aardsma...
Look at the bullpen we had last year ... We had [Mike] MacDougal, [Ryan] Bukvich ... it was hard. It's not their fault -- everybody was hurt, nobody did their job. The plans didn't work the way we thought they were going to work ... [David] Aardsma, [Andrew] Sisco. We admit it. We didn't do a good job with that. But this year we're doing it.
I worry about him, but in a game like that, I mean, that one swing obviously changed the game ... He ran down to the bullpen after we told him he was going to hit second, he warmed up the pitcher [winner David Aardsma] so he could get in the flow of the game, swung the bat, and then put a beautiful swing. I don't think people quite realize - we can't have him catch 162. Yeah, I do struggle with that. But it doesn't look like Tek is.
When you look at [Lester's] windup, particularly with his delivery in his lower half, he's much further along than he was a year ago ... Not only from a fundamental standpoint, but physically, obviously, he's gained weight, he's stronger. David Aardsma is a guy that really will grab some attention just with the pure stuff that he has. Command of his pitches and overall strike-throwing ability will be a key when we get into game situations.
We made a lot of mistakes out of the bullpen. A lot ... Right now I can't say we are going to bring this guy, this guy and this guy back because the only one with a shot is Bobby. We thought that (David) Aardsma, (Andy) Sisco and (Mike) MacDougal...you put those three pieces together with the potential they have, that's a good bullpen. All of a sudden, wow. It didn't work.
Obviously, we don't have a whole lot of time, so I really have to kind of bust my butt and really try to get back and get to the same place these guys are
I felt good -- I felt the ball was coming out really strong ... And the one good thing is I felt like I was hitting my spots really well. That was the one thing I wasn't doing before, even when I came back. I felt good but I wasn't hitting my spots. This time I was hitting my spots.
I went down, I felt really good ... The leg didn't hurt at all throwing. I think the biggest part is I wasn't tentative. It was just great being back here and great being active. I want to jump right in there and help as much as I can. The team has been playing great and they're throwing awesome, so I just want to do what I can.
I think I might have pushed it a little last time trying to get back so bad ... I kind of tried to learn a little bit from my mistake. I tried to take it a little easier and get it stronger before I just jump right back into it.
I've been getting lucky ... I got dribblers, a bunt base hit. That's how you get rolling, so hopefully I can continue being lucky and getting those balls to hit sharp, bounce back, and get little bloopers off gloves. That's some of the biggest things. That's how you get those good three or four games, unless you're like [Dustin] Pedroia and you just hit everything hard.
I think it was just from the flu, being dehydrated and laying in bed ... The doctor said it happens a lot. If it was in April it probably would have been a different story.
