Shock rock is like something that existed, for example, like in the '70's, Alice Cooper ... David Bowie, you had artists that liked to push the envelope and that's what made them so fresh. I think that surprise is part of entertainment. I think that it keeps people watching. It's fun, it makes you laugh...
I started fumbling around writing my own silly punk songs that weren't any good ... My writing just kinda blossomed into what it is today. I always loved rock and roll and always loved bands. I felt a real kinship with Joe Jackson, Billy Joel, the Beatles, Big Star, the Who and David Bowie.
somewhere between Mr. Show, David Bowie, Monty Python, Porter Wagoner and Buck Owens
Apart from the Isle of Wight festival, the last time a major band played the Isle of Wight was in 1966 apparently. And that was David Bowie -- when he was Davy Jones -- supporting the Pretty Things.
It was a special time because the vibe back then was prized creativity over commercialism ... It was a golden era for music, rock and roll for adults. Great songwriting. No wonder guys like Mick Jagger, Keith Richard and David Bowie have had careers that lasted as long as they have.
She was in her rebellious years, and from her I'd hear David Bowie, The Velvet Underground
Whether it's Bono shilling for AIDS dollars, Angelina and Madonna toting their African offspring, Gwyneth [Paltrow] and David Bowie declaring they are African, or Matt Damon and George Clooney rallying for Darfur, it appears that a new generation of philanthropists have taken up the 'White Man's Burden'
I’ve loved David Bowie since I was a kid [and] artists like Michael Jackson, Prince [and] Mick Jagger
And this is still the case today. I remember the first time I saw David Bowie, he also had the androgynous aspect to him, that was quite interesting. Pop singers, some of them, still play with the androgynous kind of sexuality.
No it really happened. He appeared, like the Virgin Mary on a tortilla, except it was David Bowie on 10th Street in front of the Chase bank.
But I’m doing something a little different. I am a huge fan of Grace Jones and David Bowie. But I was also raised in the gospel church. So I love the old gospel singers. And the sound of crackly vinyl, and things like that. They are all kind of inside my music, mixed together.
From station to station/back to Dusseldorf City/Meet Iggy Pop and David Bowie
People I love, like Bjork or Kate Bush or David Bowie or Grace Jones, have all used how they looked very much to illustrate where they are musically and in a sense where they are psychologically as a performer. I don't really think of it as fashion.
There's a David Bowie-type song, one that sounds like Johnny Cash, a Beach Boys homage, and a Bertolt Brecht rock anthem.
Swirling spotlights of colour; chauffeur-driven Mercedes-Benz; electric synthetic greens and blues for wigs festooned with thousands of dollars worth of diamonds; makeup to outshine David Bowie striking a future mood.
You could play music alone in your room, blast your music, play an instrument ... It wasn't Schwarzenegger or Mel Gibson. It wasn't `Lethal Weapon.' ... Music was Kurt Cobain, Pixies, David Bowie. Music affected me on a deep, deep level _ made me feel a part of something.
From early on, I was inspired by rock icons like David Bowie and Keith Richards who helped in molding my personal sense of style
