View Photo »He doesn't yet have the legs to stand out there [on the field] all day. As a DH, I had an opportunity to get him a third at-bat
He was OK ... That first day from him is history. He'll make adjustments off what he did today.
I'm not sure if I'll continue to manage these games or not ... It's something Joe wanted me to do early. I don't know what he has in mind going forward.
Garret looked OK, we're just getting him going ... We'll talk to him in the morning about playing the field (Monday). I wanted to get him an extra at-bat so that's why he was the DH.
Since he didn't play winter ball, we let him know that he wouldn't be feeling as good coming into camp, that it'll take him awhile to get his legs ... His BP [batting practice] has been getting better, and that's what you look for, that's part of the process.

He was too jumpy. We had to slow him down ... Raffy plays so hard, and when things aren't going well, he gets frustrated. He was rushing too much last year.

The kid's got a good arm ... you like to see that.
He looked OK with everything. He's trying to get his rhythm with the bat
first priority will be getting him in the outfield and getting at-bats. If he wants to work out at first, we'll take a look.
We talked about it, for sure, (but) nothing definitive
You can't have cellphones on the bench; it's against the rules
It was Tommy [Lasorda's] fault
I just didn't check the lineup card
Maybe you should be manager
The umpire came over and said there was a misunderstanding
I wasn't sure of the rule ... I went to the home plate ump and told him we were out of order, and he said, 'I know.' He said we had established a new order and to go with it.
I could have avoided it simply by just checking the lineup card
Obviously with Joe, everything is off of him
It's good to get that out of the way in the spring
You never stop learning ... I've got to keep my priorities straight and know what my job is. And Joe knows I've got his back.
Joe's bad temper got him thrown out when I was bench coach
They like me, I like them, and I felt like I was part of their future ... So we kept the conversation going. ... I like California. I liked it from the first time I came out to play [with the Yankees in the 1980s] in Anaheim. It fits my personality more than anything. It fits me perfectly.
They expressed that they wanted me to be a part of their future. Yes, the word manager was brought up ... I like it here. I like California. Nothing definitive was said or done. I'm not worried about money or things like that right now. I'm worried about our ballclub and soaking up as much as I can.
