If we can come out of this year learning anything, it was we were able to beat some of the best teams ... We ended up playing them extremely tough and having a winning record in...

This is an odd award, isn’t it? Measuring a manager’s effectiveness is very hard to do, so voters usually compare results to expectations. Full Article at The New York Times

Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu sensed before today's AL Manager of the Year Award came down that Mike Scioscia of the Angels would be the winner. Tough to argue, given what that Angels team went through this season, especially early on. Full Article at The Seattle Times

I said it in Spring Training, 'What you do in Spring Training sets the tone for what you do in the season,' ... We were fortunate to get out of the gate and build a belief system that we could beat some teams. Sweeping Oakland and playing the Twins as tough as we did right out of the gate, and without I...
This Oakland team came in swinging it awfully effectively ... They had some great games against both Anaheim and Texas before this series started. So I’m awfully proud of the pitching performances to negate that – Morrow yesterday (Wednesday), Felix (Hernandez) the day before that and, obviously, Fister...
Already Fister has pitched some great games, against Anaheim, against the Yankees and now against Oakland ... It's an awfully good feeling that we'll take into the winter. He went seven innings, pretty efficient.
The way Saunders has been swinging the bat ... I want to get him in the Texas series a little bit. He has done a nice job.
Last night it was Felix Hernandez and Griffey ... Tonight, change the headlines to Morrow and Griffey. That’s as good a start as we’ve had all season.
I wouldn't consider putting him in, even in a pinch-hit role, before the Texas series ... and even that's doubtful.
We’ve gone through a lot this year with injuries. We don’t have Russell Branyan, Sean White is down, (Erik) Bedard’s down ... There’s a lot of injuries, maybe the most in the American League. Eighty-one (victories) is a stepping stone. There’s more that we’re looking to do here, but under the circumstan...

We're hoping when we come out of here today he will be a little bit better ... In Seattle, the first day or two we'll look at it but it doesn't look real promising right now that he'll finish the year.
He's awfully good ... His last outing in Seattle was as good as I've seen him. (Tuesday) he battled, didn't think his fastball command was as good, but he's awfully impressive for a first-year guy. He's done a good job.
Out by first base ... I took some abuse for that – I think ESPN had a camera on me, too.
He might not be as fast as some of the others, but I haven't seen too many guys who get off the baseball better than him ... He has such a great first step. We knew he was a great defender, but it didn't shine in right field the way it does in center. You don't have the room to roam. We talk about putti...
You look around baseball and you see impact players ... Elvis Andrus with Texas probably has been as big of an impact on that club as anybody. You can talk about the pitching improvement and everything else, but that guy for me has turned everything around for the Rangers. I think you could say the same...

Jack is going to miss our trip to Florida and Toronto next week ... Playing that final week at home is possible, but it really depends on how he’s feeling then.
He's been going hard with this [recuperation] and doing a lot of work in the pool, and it gives him a chance to go home [to Florida] ... He's going to do some work with a therapist there that he's had some success with in the past. He seems pretty optimistic. The best-case scenario we're looking at now ...
I know he's probably going to have some added adrenaline ... But all those things are valuable experiences. We'd like to be able to put him in the World Series, to pitch on the big stage with a big crowd. I think the last couple of starts have already been that in the race for the Cy Young.

We’re kind of the society that cherishes the home run and power and all that stuff ... That’s what make it so special is that his peers really understand. You go through the greats like Rod Carew or Tony Gwynn – guys that are known for being good hitters – and ask them how special that record is and you...
