I was trying to please people ... and it just steamrolled. I don’t think I was comfortable enough in my own skin to do what I had been doing (in spring training). I felt like the weight of the world was on me and, if I missed a pitch, Red Sox Nation would crumble on my shoulders. But looking back on it, I can’t be Doug Mirabelli. I’ve got to be me. That where, no pun intended, I dropped the ball.
