We never talk about free agent players
The Pittsburgh Pirates showed some promise during the first half of 2011, but they are an up and coming team that won’t be a challenge for the division in 2012. Theo Epstein should look at the 2012 season as an opportunity to see what he and his...

With David, I think he was one of the most sought-after players on the trade market in 2010 before he hurt his thumb
But how long will he hold onto the job? He won the Pacific Coast League MVP after hitting .331 with 38 homers and 109 RBIs with Triple-A Iowa last season. In his 195 Major League at-bats, he's batted .262. Hoyer has cautioned that Spring Training in...
Command always has been the issue for Marmol, who hit nine batters and walked 48 last year in 74 innings. When he's on, he's difficult to hit. During a recent appearance on a Chicago radio show, general manager Jed Hoyer said the Cubs want and need...

With David, I think he was one of the most sought-after players on the trade market in 2010 before he hurt his thumb
Ultimately we feel that he is an above-average defender in right field. He’s played there quite a bit, actually moving over from center field a few years ago
One thing you try to do whenever you acquire players is have a broader lens than just the previous year
We don’t see him as a platoon player ... Does that mean he won’t get days off against tough lefties? I’m sure we’ll try to provide that support and flexibility for Dale [Sveum] but we’re not signing [DeJesus] as a platoon player.
He’s certainly not out of the picture ... Tyler struggled in 2011. He has to come to camp and bounce back from last year. We’re trying to round out our lineup and do everything we can to put the best team we can on the field. I think Tyler, given the year he had, he needs to bounce back and that starts ...
Those are things we'll try to solve ... As for the actual plan, we'll keep that to ourselves.
I think he's a rare guy who could do both
It's a unique ballpark to put a team together for ... In April and May, it's different with wind blowing in, wind blowing out. So clearly you have to score runs in many different ways. Having a team that can't manufacture runs or can't hit homers is probably a negative. We have to find a good balance be...
I think we are now in the mode of the offseason where we’re starting to look at players
He had concerns about the timing in his life ... This is a job you have to be 100 percent invested in and we had such a great candidate in Dale. It was more of a combination of factors.
I think the passion he has for the game is so obvious -- and the knowledge he has ... It wasn't that he prepared for the interview; he prepared for this [job]. This is what he had done his whole life.
The way we try to think about it is the manager manages the team with input from the front office
It was exhaustive ... We thank everyone who participated very much. Everyone of the candidates that we brought in will certainly manage in the major leagues. … In the end, it was very clear to us. There was one candidate that stood out from the other. Dale was outstanding in every way. We’re thrilled to...
When we get into the course of the year, I'll probably do most of the handling of the major league staff and that will free (Epstein) up to do a lot of other things
It's good that we reached out to the all candidates in some form or another
