After nearly eight years of Jennifer Granholm and only one year of Barack Obama, the people of Michigan want their state and country back
Obviously things are terrible in Michigan economically. They would be much worse if we hadn't had that assistance ... an acceleration of those efforts.
This is the state's first universal scholarship ... Our goal has been to double the number of Michigan (college) graduates.
I’m here to stand in solidarity with you, to ask the (Michigan Senate) to restore the Michigan Promise ... It is very clear that we have got to fund this promise, so I am asking you to stand tall and to make your voices heard.
I fully support the Detroit River International Crossing (DRIC) study which concluded the need for two major border crossings in the area — the existing Ambassador Bridge and a new Detroit River International Crossing — to enhance the flow of trade between Michigan and Ontario
Michigan stands at a crossroads: what kind of state do we want to be in the 21st century? Do we want to be a place where the unemployed suffer while we watch our jobs shipped off on a slow boat to China, on the Internet to India, or on a fast track to Mexico?

To avoid a government shutdown I've now signed the final bills that comprise the Michigan budget. This is the budget we have, but it is not the budget we need
What we’re fighting for is for Michigan not to be Mississippi
People want to see compromise ... This budget in no way represents compromise ... The vast majority of people in Michigan are not ideologues. I think they are allies in this battle.
I will not pretend that this is a good budget ... This budget cuts, rather than supports, Michigan’s most pressing priorities — educating our children and helping them pay for a college education, maintaining health care for our most vulnerable citizens, and keeping police officers and fire fighters on ...
I am particularly disappointed that the bill includes no funding for the Michigan Promise scholarships, and I strongly encourage the Legislature to get to work on finding the resources to keep this commitment to our students
The K-12 school aid budget that is just days old is woefully underfunded. The Legislature needs to act now to find the revenues that are critical to our schools. We won't solve the serious school-funding problem we have in Michigan today unless we are honest about its magnitude
Whatever happens must take into account the state's bottom line in light of the deficit ... I'm not interested in pursuing endeavors that are going to create even further crisis than already exists. The state faces a potential budget deficit of between $1.2 billion and $1.8 billion for the fiscal year t...
The fact that we would name and dedicate this park to you governor is so perfect because of your history with civil rights and your connection with the city of Detroit and your deep love of our resources
Clearly, the stimulus has helped, although, of course, unemployment is at a ridiculously high level ... And in Michigan it's a unique circumstance because we are in the middle of both an auto recession and we've been sort of a one-industry state for 100 years. So we are really focused on diversifying.
By next year, Michigan will have lost 1 million jobs
We are fighting to make sure that Michigan is diversifying its economy and educating our citizens and protecting people along the way
This budget not only has the wrong priorities, it is a fiscal house of cards that relies on one-time revenue from the stimulus money from President Obama and the federal government ... That is revenue that cannot be sustaining into the future.
