Now I was talking to Thad Matta, Billy Donovan and Leonard Hamilton ... I started having contact with Jim Calhoun and Roy Williams, and all of a sudden a lot of these coaches are calling me about players and I'm giving them information and telling them how good this kid is or whether he is good enough t...
it’s like he’s 30 years old. You see how much energy he has, how much spirit, how much he wants it. … The one thing he told me, ‘I’ll always be honest with you. If you come here, you’ll get better.’
Jim Calhoun (UCONN head coach) is one of the best coaches in the nation. His teams always play great defense and are solid in every phase of the game. We're going to have a tremendous challenge playing them but it's one we welcome.
When you talk to him, you wouldn’t know how old he is
Things don't happen until you see them happen ... These are guys who played 25 minutes a game on a national championship team, and so they expected to play. But Tyler Olander had a great summer, so he expected to play. I was going to stick with Alex, because he did too much for us last year.
He was in my arms when I told him, that’s all I can tell you ... I feel a lot about it, but I have nothing to say about it.
As a coach, this biggest question you have for your team ... is, when they’re thrown a challenge, as we were at 7 o’clock last night, how do they respond? I thought we responded great. I’ll go gome with a great sense of pride about what my team did.
Despite having a very good career, Alex has been sporadic at times ... Alex will play a lot for us, but he has to be consistent.
You almost have to know Ryan. Not too many things bother him ... He didn't get much [practice] work as far as running our stuff, but I'll tell you what he does do. He has incredible courage. He can go by most anybody. Plays very good defense. I had no qualms whatsoever about throwing him in like that.
The bigger the moment, the more he steps up
We needed Ryan Boatright.
He has great instincts, but he hasn't mastered any of the fundamental skills of finishing all those plays ... Remember, we're talking about an 18-year-old freshman. Andre can change games. There are not too many game changers out there.
He pouted a little bit, just to let us know he was down so we're supposed to give him sympathy ... I said to him, nobody's going to give you sympathy. It wasn't your fault. These are the rules you play under. Therefore, you've just got to play basketball and get ready.
I'm very, very proud of my kids
If we play like this the rest of the year ... play with this kind of energy, we're going to be in fine shape.
When they tossed the ball out, we were full of energy
Maybe it took a team like this to hit us, to bring out the best in us ... You look for signature wins. This is a signature win for us. … If we play like that the rest of the season, play with that kind of energy, we're going to be in fine shape. We don't have the championship trophy, but we're carrying ...
If you know him ... you weren't surprised. He plays with a lot of courage.
He just jumped right in, he didn't bother with the feet-wet part ... He just jumped in.
Everybody has a run in them
Alex played better and Andre showed flashes of what he’s going to be ... otherwise, the game was a complete disaster.
If you score on 80 percent of your possessions over a 15 minute period, you’ll beat any team ... Conversely, a team is not going to allow you to do that. I couldn’t be more disappointed in the way we played. One thing I thought we’d never have a problem with, is stopping people. ... We stopped playing.
I don't think I've ever seen that before ... and, incidentally, that was repeated after the Big East tournament in New York.
