Under Pat, we've really focused on doing things through player development and scouting ... So many of these guys are products of our system. We took the core that was in place . . . and added to it. Sometimes the smallest moves are the biggest ones -- like Matt Stairs and Joe Blanton.
There were so many heart attack moments. It's hard to pick one ... The pitcher (Joe Blanton) hitting the home run last night was great.
I knew they'd score runs but my biggest concern at the beginning of the year with the Phillies was their pitching staff ... They struggled early but once (Brett) Myers got things straightened out and they traded for (Joe) Blanton, the pitching staff has been real solid the last few months. They play good defense. The bullpen is lights out. When you do that, you're always in the ballgame.
I pretty much told them there's no problem, I'll pitch whenever ... I knew all along this would be the scenario.
Since he's been here in Philadelphia, I can definitely say that he's gutty and he's a bulldog on the mound
After that it was almost half downhill because that was such a rivalry
Since he's been here in Philadelphia, I can definitely say that he's gutty and he's kind of a bulldog on the mound ... And I like that part about him.
Attacking the zone is always a good thing ... It keeps your pitch count down. It allows you to work ahead in the counts. Any time you're facing a good team, if you fall behind you're going to be in a lot of trouble. So that's a very helpful thing.
It was definitely his best game because he was very aggressive and he threw strikes and he stayed after the hitters ... He definitely followed his game plan and he was very good.
