I'm very saddened by that ... I don't know much about it. John was at this dinner just a couple of years ago. I saw him earlier this year with Seattle in Spring Training. I certainly need to reach out and find out a little bit more about what has transpired.
It is reasonable to assume that from Joe Torre 's standpoint, the only way the postseason could have ended better would have been if the Dodgers had won the World Series. Full Article at Newsday

View Photo »He's gone through a lot in these two years. The thing I find remarkable is when he got hit in Arizona, I don't think any of us knew how long it would take for him to get back into that competitive mode ... But it was a lot quicker than I ever would have anticipated, and that takes a lot of courage, just...
You don't want to go into Philadelphia and have too high a mountain to climb
I had guys warming up ... I have to make a decision whether I want Elbert to pitch to (Chase Utley and Howard) or Kershaw. He's a starting pitcher in Game 1, so I felt that's what I wanted to do. He had a rough inning. It looked like he tried to over throw the ball. It looked like he got frustrated. He'...
We just felt with (Philadelphia), we wanted the option of another left-hander
I thought his command was great and his stuff -- again, he has great stuff ... Handling the whole St. Louis scene, I think that told us a lot.
I think what helped both of them this year was that, going into spring training a year ago, I had the four guys for the three spots and they were all sort of auditioning all the time ... Part of it was because we had signed a center fielder, Andruw Jones, who was going to play center field. And you cert...

I have one year left on my contract and I don't anticipate it being more than that ... I've said that before, by the way. My wife doesn't believe me. You know, it's fun. And I think if we're fortunate enough to win the World Series, it would make that next year so much sweeter. I never get tired of this...
I realized I was coming to a team that had been in two straight World Series, and I'd better grow up in a hurry
Vicente Padilla, it looked like he was feeling his way in that first inning, but after that he was nails ... He was great.
My wife Ali is sitting right here ... After we (the Yankees) won in '96, she said, 'Well, there it is. You won the World Series. Let's go off somewhere and enjoy it.' And I said, 'Let's see if we can do it again,' never dreaming that I'm here in 2009.

The Cardinal ballclub beat us five out of seven (in the regular season) ... We beat a very good team, and we won two games that Carp (Chris Carpenter) and (Adam) Wainwright pitched, which certainly did a lot for our personality and our confidence.
It's like a second home ... This is where I grew up. I played in the Braves organization, was traded for the first time to St. Louis in 1969, and I realized I was coming to a team that had been in two straight World Series and I'd better grow up in a hurry, because I think I was quite a bit immature bef...
I usually have the starter decide his own fate, but Don Zimmer taught me that this postseason stuff is all about not being patient, and doing what you feel you need to do at the time you need to do it
Don Zimmer taught me that this postseason stuff is all about not being patient and doing what you feel you need to do at the time you need to do it
The confidence I have is weird ... It’s an unusual group because we could go through a period of time playing teams and you’re wondering what’s going to happen. And all of a sudden we’ll play a series in San Francisco, Colorado, Philadelphia, Chicago, and there they are. Talent-wise we have the ability ...
Once it was over with, we exhaled, and we were on a run ... But look at St. Louis and Detroit. They both limped into it a few years ago, and they wind up in the World Series, both of them. So I don't know what is a sure-fire way to go into the postseason, to be honest with you.
We’ll go day-to-day right now ... Against [Chris Carpenter] we’ll go with Belli. And we’ll see what we have.
We'll go day to day right now against [Cardinals Game 1 starter Chris Carpenter], and we'll see what we have ... We asked O-Dog to do a lot of stuff early in the year and he played his tail off and he continues to do that. But it was just a decision I decided to make.
He's a trooper -- he'll go out and grind it ... He's earned the right. He put himself in position to be a Game 1 or Game 2 starter. This is Randy's first trip to the postseason, but as many big games as he's pitched this year for us, in San Francisco and in Arizona, a lot of games under pressure.
Joe Torre to stay with the Dodgers. Good news.
