He had a price on his head from the United States government, but it didn't stop John Brown from going from church to church, meeting from person to person.
He just kind of captures people ... Whether you're pro- or anti- John Brown, he absolutely captures people.
Now people perceive John Brown as heroic, if perhaps misguided; visionary, but perhaps foolish ... But it's not a condemnation that he's evil.
In the 1960s and '70s, because of the civil-rights movement ... they became a touch point. And so he made them into a series of silk-screen prints. Lawrence described himself as a storyteller first and foremost, so these are a narrative treatment of John Brown.
With John Brown working on their behalf the people of Troy should look forward to great things
To them (blacks), Kansas meant John Brown, abolitionism, freedom, equality, opportunity
