I'm here at the request of the Department of Defense and at the request of the executive director of the World Food Programme, Josette Sheeran, to start the integration of a humanitarian arm in the Haiti Flight Operations Coordination Center
Up until now the nature of this emergency has forced us to work in a quick and dirty way simply to get food out ... This new system will allow us to provide food assistance to more people, more quickly.
Josette Sheeran, who has recently returned from Haiti, said the move was in order to provide the most vulnerable with access to food as when things go out of control at distribution points, women and children are generally pushed aside
I am struck by the heroism of the Haitian people who've shown great dignity in the face of this catastrophe
Bill Gates sees Monsanto’s innovations as essential to the agricultural revolution in Africa to which his charitable foundation is committed. Josette Sheeran, the head of the United Nations World Food Programme, is also a fan.
I don't think we yet know the full dimension of the problem.
It is the only situation we've seen where the humanitarian community there, our own staff, are as affected as the population
people will need more food for a longer period of time than we originally expected. The supply chain of food getting in is a nightmare
We wish we could do more, quicker
Our people are living on the streets while they are saving this nation
Words cannot describe the devastation that has been wrought on Haiti.
Parts of the capital, Port-au-Prince, look worse than many war zones
I have been encouraged to find genuine cooperation and coordination ... This will allow us to knit together the o peration over the coming weeks, in a way that will ensure every Haitian who needs assistance, gets it.
This is one of the biggest scale emergency operations ever, but the magnitude of the need is so huge that we just have to figure out how to scale it up even more.
We may be able to scale up even quicker
Even though the slots are limited and the need is great, we now have the coordination mechanism to prioritize the humanitarian flights coming in
It is vital that the response from the global humanitarian community matches the immense needs of the people of Haiti
Make no mistake, every contribution will save lives. Unilever’s quick action will make a true difference to the Haitian people
We will work with the Haitian government, with our humanitarian partners on the ground, and with governments across the world as part of a coordinated international rescue and recovery effort
Our thoughts are with families who have lost loved ones and those whose, lives have been shattered
I am shocked and saddened by this terrible loss ... Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and colleagues of this dedicated man whose courage and commitment have contributed to our ability to provide food assistance to the hungry in southern Afghanistan.
We work on the frontline where climate change actually impacts human beings
This extraordinary contribution brings hope and help to the 20 million most vulnerable people that we are committed to assisting in the Horn of Africa ... Spain has been a model partner for WFP in spearheading both the response to high food prices and now, in taking the lead on our critical appeal for t...
