Phone hacking is a perfectly acceptable tool, given the sacrifices we make, if all we’re trying to do is get to the truth ... we really want to live in a world where the only people who can do the hacking are MI5 and MI6.
They are not in any way close to anything [that happened] in reality in those days within MI5 or MI6. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is not a documentary of course, but I wanted to do a film that was accurate about how it felt and how it looked, and give at least an interpretation of how it actually was.
MI5 were nowhere to be seen on that visit
