Visits of this type are seen as key in efforts to continue winning the support of the local Iraqi population. Although improved security in the region has brought some benefits such as improved trade and commerce, much of the infrastructure remains in a poor state of repair. Britain's Prime Minister Gordon Brown has indicated that the number of UK troops could be scaled down - especially as the security situation in the south of the country continues to improve.

North Carolina Superior Court judge 25 January 2007 blocked two executions until the governor and other top state officials approve a new protocol for having a doctor present.The Wake County judge's decision temporarily halts the executions of Marcus Robinson, who was to die by lethal injection 26 January, and James Edward Thomas, set to die on 02 February.The ruling came after the state medical board last week established a new policy allowing doctors to be present at executions but to play no role in them. In response, the state on 22 January announced that doctors would no longer monitor condemned inmates vital signs during lethal injections
