(Guess now that they're no longer a band, they have more time to spend surfing the Web for viral videos.) It's easy to see why Michael Stipe and company dug it. The video has everything: singing mermaids, giant Day of the Dead puppets, afro'd...

I had been under contract since I was 22. I’d been in a band since I was 19. I was experiencing something profound for the first time: freedom
Gautreau’s band, the Dallas-based Crushed Stars, isn’t exactly a project known for its uplifting ditties. Still, with a vocal quality hinting at Michael Stipe’s more down-beat moments and a musicality echoing Red House Painters, there is something...
(Music detour #3: Oasis would up the ante in 1996, releasing the intentionally meaningless single “D’You Know What I Mean?” Cheeky!) R.E.M. frontman/lyricist Michael Stipe describes the song’s first-person protagonist as a naïve do-gooder, “a guy who's...
The exhibition features a series of hazy facial close-ups, slightly abstract and painted in eye-pleasing jewel tones. Walking around the gallery, viewers will slowly recognize one portrait sitter after another — is that R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe? Chinese...

It was quite interesting the way Michael Stipe said he was proud the way they had done it [split-up] and of their legacy and if there is one thing I’m not proud of, it is the way New Order have done it.
Then I got worried when I heard simultaneous yelling out of windows, but I didn't say anything so as not to upset Charlotte (she's the name-drop, by the way). Whoever can prove they know less about sports than I do deserves something really really fun.
Michael Stipe joined the chorus of disapproval at YouTube's bizarre refusal of a Perfume Genius ad, showing two men embracing, calling the company "disgraceful and cowardly". Alan Lomax's huge archive of field recordings is finally being digitised,...
John Michael Stipe (born January 4, 1960 in Decatur, Georgia) is an American singer who is the lead vocalist for the alternative rock band R.E.M. Stipe has become well-known (and occasionally parodied) for the "mumbling" style of his early career and for his complex, surreal lyrics, as well as his social and political activism. Stipe is in... Save the drama for your momma ... If anything, in disbanding R.E.M. managed to do something that’s never been done before in the history of pop music.
Michael Stipe came up and give him a big, true bear hug
Close your eyes and imagine you’re Peter or Mike or me and you’re performing ‘Man on the Moon’ in London, England, for the last time
We were coming out of a perceived low period into an upswing, and it felt really good
Then there are the things like videos—I took care of all the album graphics and the whole visual aspects of the band ... There are tremendous mistakes in there. Bad font choices, T-shirts that I wish did not have our name on it that were sold at concerts, album covers I’m really embarrassed about.
Now I’m a former pop star ... I don’t really know what I’m going to do from here.
We didn't want to limp away with our tails between our legs ... Of course, my feelings are bittersweet, because I've been doing this since my teens. I also have no idea what I'm going to do next.
