I think in large part because Mike Gravel wasn't a frontrunner, he was willing to take chances ... Campaigns are so focused on staying on message and sticking to talking points and slogans, that very often the messages themselves begin to sound overly crafted and vetted. Seating Michigan in full would mean the party validates the kind of one-candidate election (well, 1.03, to give Dennis Kucinich, Chris Dodd and Mike Gravel, who also remained on the ballot, their due) that is more common in autocracies than democracies.
The reason I'm campaigning so hard for Mike Gravel is that I don't want people to get ripped off again by the Democrats or the Republicans
