Former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts and Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota are the top candidates as Mr. McCain and his advisers gather over the next several days at Mr. McCain’s cabin near Sedona, they said.

I'm happy to support Senator McCain. It would be great if he chose Mitt Romney as his running mate, but we probably won't know that until the convention.
People - and I use the term loosely, since I mean 'Republicans' - have questioned my patriotism for months ... They accused me of not loving my country because I wouldn't wear an American Flag lapel pin. Truth is, I didn't wear it for the same reason John McCain doesn't wear a Mitt Romney lapel pin. I didn't want to give away my choice for Vice President.
Unique to Utah, there is some donor fatigue here (among Republicans) because Utah donated more per person to Mitt Romney than any other person in history.
His top contenders are said to include Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Less traditional choices mentioned include former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, an abortion-rights supporter, and Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, the Democratic vice presidential prick in 2000 who now is an independent.
The issue is that, in many ways, Mitt Romney has had very definite swings of position, not just on one or two things, but on many of the issues ... I think that there are better choices for Sen. McCain that will have the approval of values voters.
Senior Republicans are in the dark about who he’ll name, although they say former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty are prime contenders after a trial balloon by McCain gave him very negative feedback about the idea of picking a pro-choice running mate like former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge.
He's going to pick somebody with a little bit more national experience, a little bit more manifestly ready for what will be a bright hot spotlight. To me the lead option is Mitt Romney. They are not as close as McCain is like Tom Ridge and like Governor Pawlenty. But I think that Romney right now makes the most sense
