defeat after defeat ... The Republican Party was founded on a certain sense of principles, and those principles are basically conservative principles. Yes, we do believe in the power of the people, by the people, and for the people, but we also believe that limited government is good. We believe in traditional values, in a strong national defense, and the unity of what our country is all about. 
I am running to serve as chairman of the Republican National Committee because I’m ready to help lead our party’s turnaround ... We need to turnaround our fortunes in many regions of the country. We need to turnaround our grassroots organization, our fundraising, our use of technology and new media, and our candidate recruitment. I don't think we need to come up with a new set of ideas to stand for; there's nothing wrong with the Republican party's commitment to a strong national defense, to limited government, to strong values, but the Republican party had lost credibility on those issues. Most people still embrace the kind of ideals and values the Republican party has always represented ... If we reflect those ideas consistently, the people will rally back to our side.
The installation of Mel Martinez as Chairman of the RNC [Republican National Committee] was short-lived and ended with xenophobic impulses successfully derailing the bipartisan immigration reform bill. For the party to make a legitimate claim of progress and inclusiveness, there will have to be marked improvement in diversity over the next two election cycles.
