Osborne Earl "Ozzie" Smith (born December 26, 1954) is a retired American professional baseball player who played shortstop in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals. Nicknamed "The Wizard of Oz", he is widely recognized as one of the greatest defensive players in baseball history, winning the Gold Glove Award for defensive excellence at shortstop for 13 consecutive seasons. In addition to playing great defense, Smith accumulated 2,460 hits and 580 stolen bases over the course of his 19-year career. He was also a fifteen-time All-Star and won a Silver Slugger Award in 1987 as the best hitting shortstop that year. Smith was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002, his first year of eligibility.
