I wanted to see what the experts say on who was most successful ... In my line of work, Pat Riley was a very disciplined leader but he was effective. Phil Jackson was a sometimes-humorous, sometimes-disciplined leader and he was very, very effective, of course.
We were gummed up the last couple years with a lot of people that were wishing and dreaming ... Now we have a much more motivated seller than before, and a more educated buyer and seller.
If you’re in the league, you realize the hallmark of a Pat Riley-led organization is defense
It was just an incredible year
Very few guys in the N.B.A. have a presence about them ... Pat Riley has a presence. He is a living legend. He knows of what he speaks.
We felt the case was certainly defensible ... That’s why the case went to trial.
Oh my goodness. Pat Riley is rolling over in his seat right now if he thinks this is a flagrant foul. He saw harder hits in his practices in Miami than this
He’s a pre-programmed Hologram who’ll do whatever I tell him to do
Pat Riley is rolling over in his seat right now if he thinks this is a flagrant foul ... He saw harder hits in his practices in Miami than this.
We are very happy to be able to add an experienced veteran center at this stage of the season
During those two visits, I had such a great time at both places that I had to really mull it over ... I really liked the school [San Francisco] as a whole. It's a Jesuit University. They have an amazing coaching staff with Rex Walters who played under some of the greatest coaches of all-time in Pat Rile...
We were playing against a lot more than just a team for the national championship ... We didn't find out about their motivation and their incentive and their will and their desire until 40 years later. But I remember during the course of the game I could just sense, you could look in their eyes, they we...
I didn’t see a future for him as an artist, but to be honest, I didn’t see Pat Riley or Paul Westphal as being future coaches either ... When you’re playing with these guys, you see them as basketball players. But when you’re not able to run anymore, you’ve got to start doing some other things like coac...
We didn't think about what the game meant ... Now when I look back at it, I realize how much the game mattered. The night of the loss, it was simply misery.
Stan and I have never talked about it, but he was there on the bench (an an assistant to Pat Riley)
If he didn't say it, he felt it ... He did grunt some words. He made a statement. He just wanted to let us know that they were there for real that night.
I'm interested to see how we're going to match against this team because I have a great deal of respect for what coach [Erik] Spoelstra's done and how Pat Riley has assembled that team ... They have a team full of talented players. They have some veteran guys that come off the bench that can play as wel...
Bruce is one of the top defensive players in the league ... But Bruce was rated last of all the small forwards who start, from an offensive standpoint. We know what Bruce gives us. He’s not an offensive player. He gives us timely three-point shooting, but his force for us has been his energy, athleticis...
It didn’t take him long to stop. Playing for (Pat Riley) with all the running – sooner or later you figure you’re going to have to give up one. And I think he said: ‘I better give up the cigarettes.’
I'm really feel like getting nostalgic about it, myself
Today we got back to it. Obviously, Chris and Blake are our superstars and Pat Riley used to always say, the ball is going to find the guys, the closers. Somehow, some way, we have to stay in a rhythm, we have to find a way to play off them and do things to take the pressure off those guys until they cl...
The only condition I made for coming here tonight
Dolphins’ Joe Philbin, in the row behind me on flight home, spent hours reading Pat Riley’s The Winner Within, taking notes on yellow pad.
I don't think we've gotten any more clear a picture than what we had
