Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) and Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) are the co-chairs.....camp is just another of the useless people on this committee.
I am disappointed that many of the same Republicans who spent the last few months fighting tooth and nail to prevent tax increases on the richest Americans and biggest corporations are now hesitating to give average families a break
I commend both of the panel’s leaders, Jeb Hensarling and Patty Murray, for the dignified and statesmanlike manner in which the committee carried out its difficult negotiations
This should be easy. It should be something that both parties can get behind and quickly pass, but unfortuately it seems that politics seem to be getting in the way ... Like Democrats, we think struggling Americans workers should continue to get this temporary relief for another year. There is no reason...
After the countless Inspector General reports, GAO reports, hearings, public laws, conferences and stories from veterans and clinicians in the field, it is time to act
These numbers show that in many communities, VA is unable to give our veterans the timely access to health care they deserve
The sad truth is that veterans who call to get a VA appointment have at least made the decision to reach out to the VA for help
This is not the end of a process — it is the beginning of one
It’s not enough for either side to simply say they want to reduce the deficit—now is the time when everyone needs to be putting some real skin in the game and offering serious compromises
We need to solve them ... and we're going to solve them either in a fair way or an unfair way.
Literally, I was awake every night trying to think about how to make this work
I put spending cuts and entitlement reforms on the table in a way I never expected ... I was stunned when they said, 'OK, we'll take those, but not talk about revenue.' I was surprised how the lines were really drawn in the sand on their side.
When you don't accomplish the task at hand, you tell people you didn't accomplish the task. And it hurts.
I see the challenges differently today than I did three months ago
We had to make sure that those wealthiest Americans also were part of this, so everybody was part of the solution
I went into this and had to put some blood on the table ... It was hard for me to do this. The issue for our side was, 'If we do this, we had to have some revenue on the table.' They just wanted to take the entitlement cuts and walk away from the table.
We argued, I argued many times in the committee that we put off the decision on the Bush tax cuts until after the (2012) election ... We could find $1.2 trillion in savings and revenue.
There is one sticking divide, and that is the issue of what I call 'shared sacrifice' -- where everybody contributes in a very challenging time for our country -- and that's the Bush tax cuts, and making sure that any kind of package includes everybody coming to the table, and the wealthiest Americans, ...
There is one sticking divide, and that is the issue of what I call 'shared sacrifice' -- where everybody contributes in a very challenging time for our country -- and that's the Bush tax cuts, and making sure that any kind of package includes everybody coming to the table, and the wealthiest Americans, ...
The wealthiest of Americans — those who earn over a million dollars every year — have to share, too
I'll tell you one of the problems has been a pledge that too many Republicans took to a Republican wealthy lobbyist by the name of Grover Norquist, whose name has come up in meetings time and time again
There is one sticking divide. And that's the issue of what I call shared sacrifice
I felt from the beginning that I had two tasks: one, to find a balanced agreement that I knew would be hard, and one, to show the country that Congress can work
Is it going to be fair? Is it going to be shared sacrifice or is it going to be just the working men and women going to carry the ball on this and I can't support that
