We had an opportunity to make a world premiere of a very special Canadian film. I think what you've got here is Paul Gross following his heart. It's a passion project for him: his own grandfather fought at the Battle of Passchendaele. He spent years, just through force of will and his own skill and ability, pushing this film to the screen. We don't tend to make these kinds of movies.

There is an absolute direct line between the Canadian Expeditionary Force of 1914-1918 and our men and women serving in the sands of Afghanistan today ... It’s an unbroken line of military history, and I guess to some extent, tradition. I think it helps all of us to have some understanding of that history and I would hope for them, our current soldiers, that it will be...of interest for them to see, in a sense, where it is they come from.
