More than any other political figure, it has been Paul Ryan, a charismatic rising star among Republican lawmakers who has led the charge [for lower spending], preaching a new politics of austerity as the only antidote to the crisis
We simply owe it to the country to show how we would do things differently.
The Paul Ryan plan, which the Republican House has already passed. That was a $6 trillion spending restraint
The bottom line is the folks running these things can do whatever they want
You're seeing close relationships, participation in fundraisers by party leaders in the super PAC fundraising events ... Yeah, they are starting to look a lot like a party vehicle.
It doesn't take as much money to make a difference in a House race ... A super PAC can come into a House race and spend a couple of million dollars and have that be a very, very significant piece of the total spending in that race and have a very big influence on voters.
Leadership PACs have become a very common vehicle to be treated as a kind of slush fund for former officeholders
Our budget will show how we will replace the sequester with a real fiscal fix
I'm not for turning the sequester off. I oppose that. I'm for replacing the savings in a way that's smarter
Both Republicans and Democrats have messed up this system. They have given us a lot of wasteful spending. We think this is a good tool that both of us agree on on going after that wasteful Washington spending.
We’re not suggesting it’s going to fix all our fiscal problems, but what Chris and I think this will help do is help change the culture of spending here in Washington that both parties have been a party to
But I’m not against people keeping their own money
I’m not going to argue for the economic [justification] ... because there isn’t one
It’s actually fairly easy, relatively speaking, to balance the budget by cutting spending only ... You don’t even have to cut spending. You just have to limit its rate of growth.
