Paul W. Thompson, the director of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, is stepping down to become the new rector, or president, of the Royal College of Art, London, the museum is expected to announce on Friday.
Paul Thompson doesn’t seem a hugely inspiring choice but I wish him the best. The rectorship of the college is an extremely difficult job and Christopher Frayling has done it extremely well. One of his main challenges will be ensuring that the new building in Battersea goes ahead.

As other colleges are pulling together art and design, the Royal College is splitting to Battersea and the challenge will be keeping a sense of the college reflecting both art and design. We had hoped for someone with a fine art background, not a design one. This feels like a safe choice and not a radical one.
It is an incredible privilege and honour. It’s a very exciting time for design and the college
