Piano, who co-designed the Pompidou Center in Paris, has been commissioned to build Athens' new opera house and national library. The $442 million project will be funded with an endowment from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, the public benefit organization said in a statement. Upon completion, it will be handed over to the Greek state.
Art Institute of Chicago's new Modern Wing, due to open May 2009 is pictured from the wildflower garden in Millenium Park in May of 2008. The $300 million project will expand the Art Institute to 1 million square feet, second only among U.S. art museums to the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
