Maine: Voters there got it right on same-sex marriage
One of the most divisive issues in Oregon's history may be coming back to voters as the state's largest gay-rights group kicked off their campaign Monday to legalize same-sex marriage in the state.
There's been a shift in the social acceptance of gay marriage, but obviously, based on this result, there's not a majority there
Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalize same-sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit, why or why not?
But seeing the success of a gay marriage position in Iowa, a neighboring state with somewhat similar values, is one of those facts on the ground that has changed things ... It has changed the view of some folks in the GLBT community about how far and fast they would like to push the issue.
Mainers' 53-47 vote to reject gay marriage does more than simply slap down a law that just six months ago had made Maine the U.S.'s second state to permit same-sex couples to wed.
It's still a question of when and not a question of if there will be full rights for gays and lesbians ... We should have been able to pull it out in Maine, but it may be that same-sex marriage is just on the wrong side of the tipping point.
Barack Obama is as much a messiah now as he ever was. The CBO has confirmed that not a single American had Barack Obama in mind when casting any vote for the GOP or against gay marriage. I am not thinking about Barack Obama. You are not thinking about Barack Obama. NOBODY IS THINKING ABOUT BARACK OBAMA....
I came to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage
Despite winning the governor’s race by a 17-percentage point blowout, Virginia Republicans insisted Wednesday that they had gained no broad mandate and would make their top priority the pragmatic platform that drove voters to the polls did not mention gun control or abortion, much less gay marriage.
To be frank, this is a win for motivated conservative activists who are driven by issues and not party. Dede Scozzafava's advocacy of the extreme Obama agenda would have been a great loss for the GOP and all those who care about the values enshrined in its platform ... The road to a GOP majority is not ...
The results in Maine underscore exactly why we are challenging California's same-sex marriage ban
In Maine, you probably heard about this, voters were voting on gay marriage. They decided against gay marriage, 53 to 47 percent.
Maine might be different from California but the National Organization for Marriage in Maine (which opposed same-sex marriage) waged a cookie cutter campaign
Every time the citizens have voted on marriage, they have always sided with natural marriage and rejected same-sex marriage. Maine dramatically illustrates the will of the people, and politicians should wake up and listen
Socially liberal Maine rejects a gay marriage initiative -- making it the 31st time (out of 31 tries) that voters have torpedoed such proposals. How long until gay marriage proponents start decrying America's 'climate of hate?' 3, 2, 1....
Proponents of same-sex marriage, unlike in California's Prop 8, can't blame Maine on Mormons, on African Americans who turned out for Barack Obama, or on confusing ballot wording. Their issue loses when the people decide. And it loses every time.
You have to reject the anti-gay marriage stuff, or you’ll never win anywhere but the Alabama. And California. And Maine, apparently.
To be frank, this is a win for motivated conservative activists who are driven by issues and not party. Dede Scozzafava's advocacy of the extreme Obama agenda would have been a great loss for the GOP and all those who care about the values enshrined in its platform. The road to a GOP majority is not pav...
In Maine the AP is calling the gay marriage proposition a loss. But down in Houston, Texas, the openly lesbian mayoral candidate, Annise Parker, who I really never heard of until very recently, was the top vote-getter tonight in a race still to be settled in a run-off.
Maine voters on Tuesday repealed a state law granting same-sex couples the right to marry, defeating an effort by gay activists who hoped the state would become the first to approve gay marriage at the polls.
If we don't win, then Maine will have its place in infamy because no state has ever voted for homosexual marriage
