Who'd have guessed the Padres were the most competitive team in San Diego?

I had to look at other offers and then put them against the Padres' offer. This time there's no connection with anybody and I'm not dealing with San Diego. It's definitely a different approach to the free-agent process.
The fans were outraged he was here ... Who was Trevor Hoffman? Who was this pitcher their team had got in a trade for a Triple Crown (-caliber) hitter Gary Sheffield? There were some very mad people in San Diego. We were afraid to say Trevor played for the Padres.
I understand what Trevor Hoffman represents to the San Diego. I’m not anxious to see him leave. I’m not anxious to be vilified as an outsider by people that think I don’t appreciate what Hoffman means to San Diego. On the other hand my charged is to do what is in in the best interest of the Padres for the long term.
I could give you a laundry list of baseball players who play for other clubs than the Padres and have those kind of golf club memberships here in San Diego ... Jake is going to make his home here whether he gets traded or not.
Unfortunately due to this difficult time in the midst of a divorce…Becky and I have come to the conclusion that it is in the best interests of the San Diego Padres for us to sell to an owner that can bring a World Series to the deserving fans of the Padres. Blah, blah, blah.
Matt has done a great job for us for seven years, and the fact that he's been given this new role on the national stage is a testament to how good he is as what he does, and the fact that Channel 4 San Diego's Padres coverage is recognized nationally
Growing up in San Diego, the competition is so heavy that guys can hit 95-mph fastballs ... Where I grew up, Trevor Hoffman [of the Padres], the all-time saves leader, had all his success because of the changeup. And so, after my high school coach taught me how to throw it, it was really me going out there and trying to trust it.
It's not that easy. He broke his arm in high school, so he didn't pick up the breaking ball. And he saw (Padres closer and changeup specialist) Trevor Hoffman (while growing up) in San Diego and said, 'I want to have one of those.'
I was extra excited to pitch in San Diego. I was a big Padres fan growing up ... And I had a lot of family and friends here. It's great they were able to see me in person and not just on TV. Any time you're pitching at home, you want to be as good as possible.
I have nothing but good things to say about the San Diego Padres ... They allowed me to resurrect my career.
The biggest thing I think we want to see, is what direction is this team going to go ... I'm concerned as anybody. This is the team I chose to be part of. I chose to stay here. This is all I've really known. I want to win here. I want to win in this city. This is where I want to be and where I want it to happen. ... I'm tired of the word competitive being used around the San Diego Padres. We want to win. We don't want a competitive September. We want to win in October.
I'm extremely excited about continuing my work with the Padres and the City of San Diego ... I've really enjoyed my two years with the team and XX. I'm fortunate to be able to continue working with two men -- Ted and Jerry -- who mean so much to Padres fans and to the community.
