Lou Piniella and Bob Melvin appear to know what they are doing in a baseball dugout, as long as the dugout isn’t in Seattle. 
I haven't eliminated anybody yet ... I can tell you this is a very impressive group. Whether they become the manager of the Seattle Mariners or not, it wouldn't surprise me if they were managers in the major leagues (soon).
I have withdrawn my name for consideration by the Seattle Mariners as they search for a new manager ... My decision is based on family reasons and being committed to the Red Sox organization.
The manager and pitching coach need a close working relationship ... If [the manager] has someone else in mind, then I would like to stay in the organization in another capacity. I still live in the Seattle area, and whatever happens I will still be a Mariners booster.
