It’s a great concept ... We saw some different places. I never dreamt I would go to Canada surfing and it’s the nicest place I’ve ever been. And then Cape Town was awesome not only because I did well but because it was something new.
I'm petrified of open water ... I'll go surfing in Fiji and deep sea fishing off the west coast of Australia, but Bass Strait is a whole new proposition for me. It's something I've thought about before, how I would hate to be stuck in a boat in the middle of Bass Strait.
The issue of poor water quality at Malibu was one of the reasons that the Surfrider Foundation came into existence and find a solution to the septic problem has been a long time coming, so this is a huge achievement for the surfing community
This year's event is a really special occasion for us because it's the first time we have united all of Surfrider's Hawaii chapters together ... The Award Ceremony is in memory of John Kelly, one of the greatest surfers and environmental activists Hawaii has ever produced. The event honors ocean-lovers ...
I really enjoy this wave out here at Lobitos and surfing my backhand
Peru is a region that is ripe with wave potential and sending the ASP Top 17 there year after year aligns perfectly with our initiative to send the world's best surfers to the world's best waves.
This was my first heat back at Steamer Lane since the injury, so it’s nice to have a good heat back ... I’ve been surfing here ever since the injury, I just hadn’t had time to compete here because I was going to Hawaii earlier. I got a couple of nice waves in that heat, they were glassy and easy to surf...
I checked Target, Toys R Us and Walmart several times, but they were all out of stock. Finally, I went on eBay and bought a three-hamster set with the playhouse, surfboard, exercise wheel, beds and covers for a little over $200. Lainey was thrilled.
It’s probably not even going to feel that cold after coming down from Canada ... I like Steamer Lane, it’s a really fun wave. It’s a point break and I grew up surfing a point, so I’m looking forward to the contest.
Sunset’s probably the most challenging wave I’ve ever surfed ... It forces you to take risks, a really high performance wave. Surfing here is a pretty spectacular feeling.
To hear all the guys on the beach when I am surfing a wave or getting a score feels great
It’s impressive to see him (Pete Devries) and all of us surfers are talking about him ... There’s always that odd local that gets through, but doesn’t really impress everyone, but Pete’s surfing is as proper as anyone. One of the waves he caught in his last heat was one of the best I’ve seen and he dese...
I’m loving Canada ... The views and terrain are breathtaking. I’m from cold weather too, so surfing in a wetsuit is fine with me and I think it’s a bit of an advantage for me, surfing in a wetsuit all of the time. I’m having a great time and I just have to keep progressing through the rounds.
In San Diego, we have surfing, water activities, beach activities, biking…some of those things are very difficult to do with glasses and contact lenses. And the enjoyment that people get out of doing (these activities) without glasses and contact lenses sometimes is overwhelming.
Two years ago, I was in a pinch for a Halloween costume, so I threw on my wet suit and went to school as a surfer. But, I\'m pretty thin and all day people came up to me saying how creative my surfboard outfit was!\
I never thought I’d end up surfing in Canada ... It has such a beautiful landscape and there are fun waves here. I’m stoked to be here for the contest and hope I can continue to surf well in the next round.
It’s definitely a big adjustment coming from Hawaii ... I ended up surfing a swell right before I left with 80 degree weather, so coming straight to the cold weather, and wearing a wetsuit restricts you on a wave, but I’m stoked to get through after the long journey.
I’ve been surfing the cold water over the last few weeks ... I was up in Northern California for a bit and got used to the booties, so I’m feeling pretty comfortable.
From Straddie to Bali, this year's Challenge brought the top juniors to some of the best waves in the world ... Long waiting periods, epic conditions, man-on-man heats and progressive surfing made the Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge stops the most exciting contests of the year. We lived up to the hyp...
I used to do lots of ‘QS events and now I’m more focused on my free surfing career ... I took that approach out in the water with me today. I didn’t want to just do safe turns to the beach. That’s not how I like to surf and surfing how I normally do when I’m not competing seemed to work out there for me...

In 1972, I decided I was going to be a surfer after watching Chris' brother, Sam, surf ... In 1981, I contacted Chris. He made some boards for me. He was not just a board shaper, he was a craftsman.
I'm just stoked to be part of such a big event and to see some of the best surfers in the world surf the waves I've grown up on and see what they can do ... Plus, a small part of the coast around Tofino will be showcased to the world.
I got off to a good start ... The waves kind of suited me so I was just free surfing and kept improving wave by wave. A few waves came my way so I got into a good rhythm and ended up sneaking into a barrel. There were great waves out there and I’m stoked we moved it over to Lagido today.
