When you dump this additional cut, it sort of breaks the back of this university ... We had to look at our core mission, and it’s about instruction and research to support the 35,000 students that come here. In order to absorb this next large cut, we had to look at significant restructuring.
This is not some draconian measure that we're implementing
The presence of police officers on the street makes a big difference in the public safety atmosphere of a neighborhood
We have serious problems downtown with open-air drug trafficking. We have an extremely serious problem with robberies downtown ... These are not members of our homeless community that are committing these crimes. ... Homeless and impoverished people deserve safe streets just as anybody else does.
