I am not advocating a general moratorium on all biofuels because there are biofuels and biofuels - there are good and bad ones.
A banner reading 'Danger biofuels : save the forests, save the climate' displayed by Greenpeace activists is seen of the ruins of the Machu Picchu as the V Summit of Heads of State and Government Latin America, Caribbean and the European Union (LAC-EU) in Lima is to begin May 15. Filipino farmer Gamaliel Pagharion inspects his rice farm after it was damaged by flood and pests, a recipe for a failed harvest in Pigcawayan the rice producing town of North Cotabato province in southern Mindanao island on May 9, 2008. Philippine authorities would pursue an "aggressive" buying policy to boost rice stocks for one of the world's largest rice importers ahead of the typhoon season and supply cheap rice to the poor. The shift to biofuels productions or other land use, trade restrictions, increased demand from Asia, poor harvests due to calamities and pests and higher transport costs have all been blamed for the price rises to near-record levels in recent months.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on April 29, ordered a top level task force to take on the global crisis caused by rising food prices and urged key producer nations to end export bans. We also must shun biofuels that are grown by clearing biologically-rich habitats, such as tropical rainforests, as has occurred with oil palm and some other biofuels
Politicians in Western Europe must be prepared to stand up to the oil industry and be more supportive of the biofuels industry to make sure the production of biofuels is sustainable.
Different biofuels vary enormously in how eco-friendly they are ... We need to be smart and promote the right biofuels, or we won't be helping the environment much at all.
The EC's directive recognizes that not all biofuels are alike and that government policies should be aimed at encouraging best practices for sustainable biofuels production
