I think it's true that Singaporeans have very high expectations of their government and therefore whenever there's a lapse, they take it very seriously ... But the last thing we need is a witch hunt which would damage and demoralize our intelligence and security agencies.
Police will continue to monitor the situation closely, and if necessary, introduce further measures to deal with the problem.
The recent immigration actions...against a few Myanmar nationals were not the result of political pressure or requests from the Myanmar government ... Our laws apply to everyone, whether local or foreign...this small group of Myanmarese nationals chose to break the law and yet defiantly demand the right to stay in Singapore as an entitlement.
Their unlawful behavior was an unnecessary distraction to our security forces and could have compromised the security arrangements
We are encouraged by such continued public support. We remain committed to finding and capturing Mas Selamat no matter how long it takes. We have done it before
If Mas Selamat has escaped abroad, we will work with the relevant foreign counterparts to track him down and bring him back into custody in Singapore
As the state-to-state relationship is continuously developing, the cooperation between Chinese police and Singaporean police has been increasingly closer
We obviously cannot dismiss the possibility that Mas Selamat could have managed to escape Singapore for another country. Singapore is not a fortress
They have expanded their scope to go beyond counselling (by) increasing their capabilities, so that they can deal with the phenomenon more effectively. I think this is a good development for us as a community.
He was a very serious person, very dedicated to his work, very obliging, very helpful to those who seek his help
I was just meeting with him a fortnight ago over lunch, talking about ideas for National Day Rally and he was giving me feedback on the cost of living and the issues which people are concerned about on the ground. He didn't pull his punches. He was a strong supporter of the (PAP) party, but what he felt we needed to know, he would tell us directly, and we appreciated that.
