I waited many years to finally read in your column that 'the PTC is right when it suggests that explicit content is not necessary to create entertainment,' ... As for your last sentence that 'if TV disappeared tomorrow, teenage sex would not,' this is true, but there would be much less.
Those of us born in those five years after World War II grew up with Howdy Doody, Rin Tin Tin, 'The Honeymooners,' Ed Sullivan and 'Father Knows Best,' ... We were the same naked, fornicating, stoned kids at Woodstock. We didn't need no stinking sexually explicit TV for us to go crazy. It's programmed in the teenage brain. How and where did these PC jerks grow up? Maybe it was rock 'n' roll that made us go nuts. Yeah, Elvis made us do it. Duh.
When I read about 'House' getting a nomination, I thought of Willie Mays in 1973 falling down in center field as a Met ... Picking 'House' as a best series this year would be like picking Willie for the All-Star game that year based on his great career. Although let me say that 'House' used to be very good, but was never in the Willie Mays category.
I hope the writers get out of their deepening rut ... It's a show worth saving. It took a chance and went against the established ideas of a sympathetic character, and came up a winner.
Lou Grant, the early Captain Picard, Archie Bunker - they all get 'hearts' eventually ... House's heart is so little. But one can feel the pressure closing in on him to start to show his warm side. He'll be buying flowers for orphans before we know it. Unfortunately, that'll finish off the show's concept, too.
